Vancouver warming centres busy, given sub-zero temperatures

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As we anticipate more snow and low temperatures at the end of this week, the City of Vancouver says staff at the three warming centres are ready.

Ethel Whitty is director of Homelessness Services and says Britannia Community Centre, the Carnegie Community Centre and the West End Community Centre have all been busy over the last few days.

“We’re open tonight and Thursday night. We’ve already made that call. We’ll wait then, and see what things look like later on Wednesday or early Thursday morning, in terms of the next few days,” she explains.

“Although we are expecting right now that we’re very likely to have to open possibly even right through the weekend,” she notes.

Whitty adds no one has been turned away the last couple of nights.

The warming centres are in addition to the city’s shelters.

People can stop in for a cup of coffee and something to eat. You can spread your own bedroll if you have one, but there aren’t beds available.
