Bill Nye calls out Justin Trudeau over pipeline approval

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – TV personality Bill Nye “The Science Guy” has put Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the spot over his approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion.

The two were taking part in an armchair discussion at the University of Ottawa about science investments in the recent federal budget.

During the hour-long discussion today, Nye mostly praised Canada for its focus and funding on science and research. But towards the end of the event, he brought up Kinder Morgan, and pointed to research that shows Canada could today be completely powered by renewable energy.

Trudeau responded by saying Canada is going through a transition.

“While we are developing those alternatives to fossil fuels, we still need to be able to power our homes, our cars, our economy,” he says.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Nye stopped short of criticizing the Prime Minister, but said “the pipeline is, in the big picture, bad.”

He did however praise Canada’s carbon pricing plan as something that “will change the world.”
