VPD says woman accused of parental abduction may have changed child’s appearance

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver Police say a woman who’s believed to have abducted her nine-year-old son may have changed his appearance or dyed his hair.

The VPD believes 34-year-old Shawana Chaudhary — also known as Shawna — has taken her son, Emerson Cusworth, despite a court-imposed custody order.

Police say the boy’s father called them after he went to pick up his son on Friday after school, as per his court-ordered parenting time, but Emerson was not there.

Investigators say Chaudhary may be using her old legal name, Virjinia Leeman, which could also be spelled Virginia Leman.

The VPD has released an updated photo of Emerson, adding they have information that leads them to believe that the boy’s appearance may have been changed and his hair may have been dyed.

Chaudhary, who could also be travelling with her six-year-old daughter, may also have changed her appearance.

No Amber Alert has been issued, as police say there’s no “indication that either child has been harmed or is in imminent danger.”

Chaudhary appears South Asian, 5’8″ tall, weighing roughly 106 lbs, with long dark hair and dark eyes.

Emerson also appears South Asian, about 55 lbs with short black hair and dark eyes.

Anyone with information about their whereabouts, their recent activities, or possible travel plans are being encouraged to call 911, the VPD at 604.717.0601 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477).
