Firefighting, nursing among most respected professions: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – How do you rank your level of respect for various professions? A new survey is gauging just that.
Nurses and firefighters are the top two on a list of jobs Canadians have a positive opinion of, with farmers, doctors, and teachers coming in next.
Mario Canseco with Insights West, which did the poll, says while there wasn’t generally much of a difference between generations for most professions, that wasn’t the case for police officers.
“We do see a higher level of respect among Canadians over the age of 35. If you’re a Generation X-er, if you’re a baby boomer, you’re more likely to look at say, police officers in a positive light, but the numbers are really not that high for the 18 to 34.”
The percentage of Canadians who have a very or somewhat positive opinion is up about eight points over last year’s survey. When it comes to which profession saw one of the biggest jumps, Canseco says journalists fall into that category.
“We’ve done this for now three years in a row and every year journalists are doing better than the year before,” he tells NEWS 1130. “I think this may have a lot to do with the fake news phenomenon and all of the discussions related to where we’re getting our news and information and it’s making Canadians be more respectful of the work that journalists do.”
Canseco adds the lowest ranked professions are car salespeople and politicians. The latter has a particularly low rating among women, Canadians over 55, and people living in Atlantic Canada.
