UBC wins first men’s volleyball championship in 35 years

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re a student or alumni of UBC, you have reason to be proud this week.

The men’s volleyball team has won the national championship and the team is returning to campus tonight.

Irvan Brar, captain of the Thunderbirds, says it’s the first championship for the team in 35 years.

“I think people are pretty excited about it,” says Brar.

“The UBC president is tweeting about it. He’s super stoked. He’s going to have us over on Wednesday to have a nice dinner.”

UBC beat Trinity Western in three sets on Sunday in the USports Final at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

“I grew up watching both Trinity and UBC and we’re glad to finally get one over Trinity Western because they won for the last two years.”

Brar, who is from Surrey, says winning the national championship was the team’s goal at the start of the season.

“We were at nationals last year, coming fourth place. So, we knew it was definitely attainable.”

UBC women’s volleyball earned the bronze medal at nationals in Quebec City on Sunday.
