JUNOs create local economic spin-offs

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The movers and shakers of the Canadian music industry are in Vancouver for the JUNOs. The big awards ceremony was Sunday, but festivities took place all week.

Local bars and restaurants are seeing a definite spin-off effect.

Ian Tostenson is the president of the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association and says anytime Vancouver can host an event of this caliber, it brings a lot of people downtown, who might spend some time eating and drinking.

So how much would the JUNOs be worth to the local economy?

“We used to talk about a hockey game being worth a million bucks. The JUNOs are worth millions for sure. What the exact number is, I’m not sure. But if you look at the hotels and restaurants–even taxis do well, so it’s in the millions of dollars,” he says.

“If you go to the new Parc facility downtown, both hotels are absolutely jam packed this weekend. That’s not something that happens every weekend for sure.”

He thinks even the big clothing retailers downtown are enjoying an uptick, thanks to their location and people needing to outfit themselves for JUNO parties.
