Don’t let your guard down just because you’re near home: RCMP

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – While police say they’re not connected, they are warning you to be vigilant after a pair of sexual assaults in homes around the Lower Mainland this week.

The second of the two attacks happened in Surrey yesterday morning. In that case, a man is said to have broken into a home in the area of 132A Street just south of 108 Avenue and sexually assaulted a girl.

He got away after he was confronted by another person, and Surrey RCMP are now out with a warning to make sure you stay safe: Don’t let your guard down.

“We’re asking that people stay vigilant — lock their doors, take personal security measures,” says Surrey RCMP Corporal Elenor Sturko.

“There’s no need for anyone in the community to panic. The RCMP is investigating,” she adds.

Police have not released any further details about what happened, nor the girl’s age. They only say she is a minor.

This incident happened just days after Langley RCMP say a woman in Aldergrove was grabbed as she took out the trash and was sexually assaulted in her home.

Corporal Holly Largy with Langley RCMP says you need to be aware, even if you’re somewhere you know well.

“Anytime that you go out, potentially there could be somebody lurking about. You don’t know, just because you’re near your own home. You should always have a look around, be very aware of what’s going on around you.”

Always report anything suspicious, no matter insignificant you may think it is.
