Pipeline meeting in Ottawa not likely to stop battle: UBC political scientist

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Trans Mountain pipeline battle will go to Parliament Hill on Sunday as the Prime Minister hosts a meeting with Premier John Horgan and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley.

Justin Trudeau and Notley both want the expansion to move forward, while Horgan has been adamant to stop it.

With none of the three parties likely to change their position, Max Cameron, Poltical Science professor at UBC, believes the meeting won’t end the fight.

“What’s driving this conflict is a very powerful opposition to building the pipeline in BC,” he says “It’s not something that Horgan can back down from, particularly given the fact that he’s in an arrangement with the Greens that his government depends on.”

Cameron adds it’s noteworthy that there will be no Indigenous voices at the table.

The one thing that we might see out of the meeting, is Trudeau offering to buy a stake in the project.

“To provide assurances to the investor that this is feasible,” says Cameron “I think that in the end, that’s really what’s motivated this crisis, is i’m not sure that the investor is seeing this as being a profitable venture at this point.”

The meeting is set to start at 7am PST with the leaders expected to talk to the media at 10am PST.
