Canucks to pick 7th overall in 2018 NHL draft; fans disappointed but not surprised

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Canucks have once again missed out on a top-three pick in the NHL entry draft. Vancouver will be picking 7th overall this year, a drop from 5th last year.

“Not surprised, it was expected. I think they had the highest percentage to get number 7,” says Vancouver Canucks fan, Scott Wilson, after watching the draft lottery at the Sportsbar LIVE! At Rogers Arena “I was hopeful but I’m also not surprised.”

Prior to the NHL draft lottery, optimism and excitement filled the bar but once it was revealed that the Canucks will pick 7th, many fans bowed their head down in disappointment.

“3 years in a row without any luck,” says Mitchell Cross “Kinda sucks.”

“Well I guess it’s probably expected, right? We never get a top three pick, it’s been how many years? Long time,” says Tammy Wilson.

The Canucks did only have a 7.5 % chance at the number 1 overall pick. With the draft lottery now out of the way, fans are focusing on the positive and looking ahead.

“At least the Oilers didn’t win and, you know what, we’re not ninth, so it’s alright,” says Belsher Samra.

“Middle of the top 10 is still good,” says Kalvin Divorski “I think people might be a little dissapointed that we didn’t get a chance to move up but I think there’s still lots of good players availble.”

Fans now also thinking about how that pick should be used.

“They need a defenceman,” says Greg Vonmatt “Whether they wanna go to North America or Europe to get him, it’s a coin flip at this point.”

“We need D, we need D,” says Arvind Machhianh.

Many fans also think a star forward or centre is needed with the Sedins gone.

This year’s draft will be held in Dallas, June 22-23.
