Real facetime: campaign encourages families to drop the phones and talk

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new campaign is aimed at encouraging families to have more face-to-face conversations — May 21 is Talk Spot Day.

Speech and Hearing BC defines a “talk spot” as any opportunity where families can have a conversation free of devices.

Speech pathologist Becca Yu says screens inhibit conversation, leaving a negative impact, especially on younger children.

“During those early few years of development, so under five years old, a lot of the learning is through their environment and what exposure they get in their environment.”

She explains any place can be a talk spot, even if you’re performing everyday activities.

“I may have the kids put our groceries away together, and either label and show them what all the items are or I may ask them to help me put things away and can give instructions,” Yu tells NEWS 1130.

She warns screens, whether they’re tablets, TVs, or phones, tend to limit conversation and can even set back a child’s verbal developmlent.
