New campaign to have Site C dam halted

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As the Trans Mountain project gets more and more attention, several groups want another energy project in the province stopped.

There’s a new campaign to get the Site C Dam project halted.

An open letter was sent to both the Federal and Provincial governments asking for construction to stop until the courts decide if this project will go through.

Craig Benjamin is with Amnesty International. He says the region that would be flooded is historically important to indigenous peoples.

“There’s also one of the very few areas left in northeast BC that hasn’t already had significant impacts from large scale resource development.”

He blames both the province and the federal government, which were both under different leadership at the time, for pushing this project through.

“Through the whole decision making process leading to the approval of Site C, consistently and consciously [governments] refused to look at building the dam was compatible with their treaty obligations.”

The estimated cost of the project is $9-billion.
