Appeal for information after SeaBus, pleasure craft nearly crash in Vancouver Harbour

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Police Marine Unit is asking for the public’s help after a SeaBus and pleasure boat nearly collided in the water last week.

Investigators say this happened just before 1 p.m. on May 5th. That’s when they say the SeaBus was about halfway across the city’s harbour heading towards North Vancouver when the other boat was spotted going roughly 55 km/h near the SeaBus.

“The approaching pleasure craft, who was required by the Collision Regulations to ‘give way’ to the SeaBus, continued on its course and speed putting it into a collision course with the SeaBus,” says the force in a statement.

They add the horn was sounded several times as the boat quickly approached the SeaBus, but the person on the other boat didn’t stop.

“When the pleasure craft was approximately 600 feet away, the master of the SeaBus executed an emergency stop, which resulted in the pleasure craft passing within 30 feet of the bow of the SeaBus and continued eastbound through the harbour,” says police.

Witnesses say the pleasure craft had two men and a woman on board. It’s described as a white, 28 to 32 feet, Sport Fish style boat with twin black outboards.

There were more than 200 passengers and a four crew members on the SeaBus at the time.

Anyone with images or more information about this case is asked email Constable Jamie Gibson and provide the file #2018-89766.
