LIONS BAY (NEWS 1130) – A small forest fire is burning off the Sea-to-Sky highway and north of Lions Bay, which caused a few problems for a handful of hikers in the area today.

Martin Colwell, the search manager with Lions Bay Search and Rescue, says a team got the call this afternoon and had to retrieve six hikers north of Brunswick Beach.

At least two of them were airlifted out of the area. Luckily, there are no reports of injuries.

“Everyone’s in good shape,” says Colwell.

The fire is about four kilometres north of Lions Bay in the Tunnel Point area.

Donna MacPherson with the BC Wildfire Service says ground crews and two helicopters are working in fairly steep ground on Brunswick Mountain, but at this point, no lives are at risk.

“Right now, we’ve been told that this fire is not on a trail, but adjacent to one. There’s no homes at risk in that area at all.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
