Woman reports to police that her friend had fallen backwards into Squamish River

SQUAMISH (NEWS 1130) – There’s still no trace of a man who was swept away in the fast-moving waters of the Squamish River north of the city.

RCMP say a woman called at about 1 a.m. yesterday to report her friend had fallen backwards into the fast-running river, as the two had been camping with friends on Ashlu Forest Service Road, north of Squamish.

Due to the darkness, the group of friends lost sight of him.

Police are working with search and rescue crews to find the man, but high water levels and extreme current from the spring melt are making things tough.

RCMP Corporal Sascha Banks says their police boat is back in the water today combing over the Howe Sound area.

“As well, our Squamish Search and Rescue has been along the river banks this morning. As well, they have a chopper going up today to check to see if there’s any signs.

The missing man is from Kenya and is in his mid-20s.
