Netflix announces multi-year deal with the Obamas

LOS GATOS, California (NEWS 1130) – Netflix US has announced a massive deal with a former First Family.

The streaming platform announced on Twitter today that it has entered a multi-year “storytelling partnership” with former US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.

The pair is set to produce a variety of content according to Netflix, including scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries, and features.

If you’re worried about being able to watch it on the Canadian version of the service, don’t be. The California-based company says it will be available to the 125 million-member Netflix households in the nearly 200 countries streaming Netflix.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” says President Obama in a Netflix release.

“That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix – we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

The Obama’s will be operating under “Higher Ground Productions”, an entity they created specifically for the Netflix deal.

“Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others,” says Mrs. Obama.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos says he’s very proud to be entering a partnership with “the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures”.
