Traffic disruptions to begin on Vancouver’s East 1st Avenue

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) -Heads up if your commute includes East 1st Avenue in Vancouver.

Underground gas line construction begins on Monday, but partial closures kick in tonight, Saturday.

“And these will be between Rupert Street and Nanaimo Street, and between the Highway 1 overpass and Boundary Road,” explains Grace Pickell with FortisBC. “In those areas, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.”

These lane disruptions, however, are only just the begining she says.

“There will be more road closures. So this is the lane closures that are going to be taking place throughout the summer, and then there will also be the full road closure of East 1st Avenue that will take place from July 3rd to August 31st, and that will be from Nanaimo Street to Clark.”

The City of Vancouver is encouraging people to start looking at different ways to get around during the two month closure, whether it be by biking, taking transit or walking.

Pickell adds there will be signage and crews on site to help get people to where they’re going.

“There are detours in place, and we will have flaggers on site to help move the traffic around.”

FortisBC is conducting some major upgrade work on existing lines.

“Well we are upgrading a natural gas line in the area that serves more than 200,000 of our local customers, so that is what the work is for,” Pickell says.

Gas line construction will continue into 2019.
