VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A month after launching new short-term rental rules, the City of Vancouver says it has taken down nearly 400 listings and converted some to long-term rentals.
In a release, the city says it is also “actively investigating” more than 1,500 properties that may be illegal, including commercial spaces and units deemed unsafe under the new licensing program.
“The City’s enforcement team has been working on creative, proactive strategies to identify and go after illegal short-term rental operators,” said Kaye Krishna the city’s general manager for development, buildings and licensing. “We expect that our enforcement tools will only continue to strengthen as we get new data sets from short-term rental platforms.”
The city is also taking some commercial operators, representing 89 listings, to court to collect fines upwards of $890,000.

Another 400 listings have been given warnings, safety inspections and fined while 100 listings are being audited for duplication and incorrect business licences.
On April 19, it became illegal to run a short-term rental of a secondary suite or laneway house unless it is the owner’s principal residence or, if a long-term rental tenant gets permission from the owner.

Since then, the city has issued 900 short-term business licenses, the majority of which are in detached homes and apartments and received 430 citizen complaints.
Property owners or tenants who currently operate a short-term rental out of their principal residence have until Aug. 31 to get a valid business licence or they could face prosecution and fines starting at $1,000.
