Overall, air quality in Metro Vancouver good: report

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We all remember last summer’s haze due to wildfires, the air quality advisories, and the concern for people with breathing problems.

But while the air was bad then, a new report from Metro Vancouver highlights that overall, air quality is improving in our region despite a population that continues to grow.

“Air quality in the region is good most of the time, we’ve seen improvements over the years in air quality. However, sometimes we do get exceptional events. The smoke we saw from wildfires in 2017 was unprecedented,” says Air Quality Planner Julie Saxton.

“In the review of what happened last summer with respect to wildfire activity and the smoke impact, there’s a chart, and you can see clearly in that chart that in previous years we haven’t really had a huge number of exceedences of our ambient air quality objective.”
