US tariffs on steel, aluminum bringing Canadians together: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There are few issues which bring Canadians of all regions and political stripes together.
But a new poll indicates the tariffs the Trump administration has imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum are doing just that.
Bruce Anderson with Abacus Data says four in five people say they oppose that American decision.
“People seem really united in response to Donald Trump’s tariffs against Canadian aluminum and steel. They’re mad, they believe that Canada should push back. They’re not sure if pushing back is going to work but they think it’s better than lying down.”

The poll also finds around 70 percent support for our federal government’s retaliatory measures.
“I think what we’re seeing right now is that even though people know that there are risks if we stand up for ourselves, they don’t really like the idea of just kind of accepting whatever it is that this US president tells us we have to live with,” he tells NEWS 1130. “Even if there is some risk in pushing back, we’ve got to take that risk is what people say and they say that whether they’re New Democrats, or Liberals or Conservatives.”
Canada responded to US tariffs on steel and aluminum by announcing countermeasures of its own. Canadian tariffs on certain US products are expected to go into effect on July 1.
