VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A car-share commuter got a bit of a shock this morning after the Car2Go he had just got out of burst into flames.
Dainan Fraser says it happened just a few minutes after he parked at West Cordova and Cambie.
“I heard a loud bang, a loud explosion, and I looked out of my window and I just saw black billowing smoke,” he says.
“I was like, ‘Oh, I should probably get out of the building,’ not knowing it was going to be my car and then I head out the front door of the office and the Car2Go was in complete flames.”
Fraser says he wasn’t in the car long before he parked it at work.
“It was just a quick drive too, from my place to in Coal Harbour down to Cordova and Cambie–it’s like a four, five minute drive,” he says, adding that he was considering leaving his backpack in the car since he would be returning to it momentarily.
“I thought ‘No, I better grab it,’ and I’m glad I did.”
Firefighters were quick to arrive but all that’s left of the car is a blackened frame. Fraser says he’s in contact with Vancouver police as they investigate.
“Although it’s still early in the investigation, the VPD and VFRS are investigating this fire as an arson,” says the VPD’s Jason Doucette.
Doucette adds there were no injuries, but a couple of buildings near the car fire were damaged.
