Hastings Park is going to the dogs as the track rolls out bulldog races

Canine races get underway at Hastings Park in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You could say Hastings Park is going to the dogs. The Vancouver horse track is hosting its inaugural bulldog races on Saturday afternoon and as part of its annual “Dog Days of Summer” promotion, there will be a lot of canines at the track.

It all started with wiener dogs nine years ago and they became so popular, Hastings Park General Manager Darren MacDonald says they decided to give bulldogs a try.

However, he admits they’re not the fastest of animals. “I think that’s part of the allure of it. Half of them, they won’t even actually race, they’ll just play with each other out on the track. It’s not really about the race itself.”

The bulldogs will square off for the honour of top bulldog and a chance to wind $500 and a doggy prize pack.

As for the wiener dogs, they’ll be back the weekend of the July 14 and 15 and also new this year will be corgis, which will be on the track on Aug. 12. “It’s definitely not going to be the competition level of horse racing, but it’s going to be very entertaining,” adds MacDonald.

There will be food trucks, craft beer and live music at this weekend’s event.
