Vancouver to have more than 1,000 child care spaces by 2021

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s closer to reaching a goal of creating more than a thousand child care spaces over four years.

Mayor Gregor Robertson says, thanks to support from private developers and the NDP government, all 1,064 spaces should be open by 2021, but right now, 374 spaces are in place.

“Certainly, we would have liked to have seen more support from the previous BC government for child care. There’s been many years of vigorous advocacy from the community to get more child care investment. We need that right across BC. We can’t just push the pace in Vancouver.”

Katrina Chen, the province’s Minister of State for Child Care, says record investments were promised in February’s budget.

“We’re very committed to work with partners in local communities including municipalities, school district, to make sure we can look for opportunities to create more child care spaces and also different type of child care needs and services for different types of communities.”

Chen and Robertson were speaking at the Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House near Renfrew and 5th Avenue.
