Major road closure starting Tuesday in Vancouver, as gas line work expands

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You’ve likely experienced it by now — being stuck in traffic thanks to ongoing road work projects across the region and there’s another one you can add to your list.

You already know East 1st Avenue between Nanaimo and Rupert Streets is messy because of some partial lane closures and gas line upgrades being done by Fortis BC. Starting Jul. 3, E. 1st Ave. from Nanaimo Street to Clark Drive will be completely shut down until the end of August.

Trevor Wales with Fortis BC admits they have received some negative feedback, but says the majority of people get it.

“This is the time that was approved by the municipality. I mean, the summer months are typically a little bit quieter and it’s to work in tandem with some of the other projects that have also been coordinated by the city at the same time. We have heard some frustration from businesses [but] they understand the important nature of this work, but at the same time we fully understand the inconveniences that this may pose.”

He adds the work that’s being done is needed. “To make sure our customers receive the same natural gas that they count on in their homes and businesses every day.”

Later this year work will also take place in Burnaby on Lougheed Highway and on Broadway from Madison Avenue to Bainbridge Avenue and next year a similar project will take place on Como Lake Avenue between North Road and Mariner Way in Coquitlam. Exactly when the work will be done in both of those communities is still being finalized, according to Wales.
