Surrey gang violence task force set to release report

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – How do you stop gang violence in Surrey? A task force put together by Mayor Linda Hepner is looking to answer that question in a report being released on Tuesday.

The task force, created last October, has been looking at existing programs and services in place to help reduce gang violence and how they can be improved. The report is expected to include findings and recommended action steps.

“I am confident the Task Force will be integral in identifying programs and service gaps that will help our youth remain out of the downward spiral of gang life and its inherent dangers,” Hepner said in a news release when the task force was created.

Over 20 people are on the task force, including Hepner, councillors, police officers, business leaders and private citizens.

This comes at a time when many in the city are fed up with violence. A large rally was held out front of Surrey City Hall last month, after two teenagers were shot and killed.

And just a few days after that rally, a man named Paul Bennett was shot and killed in his driveway in Clayton Heights. Following Bennett’s death, Hepner said Mounties will find the people responsible.

A recent poll found most people in Surrey believe the city is the most dangerous in the region and should have its own police force.
