Hiker rescued from Widgeon Falls area

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A hiker who was hurt on a mountain trail near Pitt Lake is now recovering in hospital.

Coquitlam Search and Rescue members were called out to rescue the man Monday afternoon in the Widgeon Falls area.

“He either sprained or broke his ankle,” says Jim Mansell with the search team.

He adds the man did a lot of things right — like hiking in a group of people. “His friend stayed with him, so that was good. It’s always a good idea that someone knows where you’re going, too.”

Mansell says the man was a “victim of circumstance.”

“I don’t know exactly what he did to hurt his ankle. But he stayed where he was, we located him, and it wasn’t a problem getting him out.”

It was a relatively easy rescue. Mansell says crews were able to find the man, get him into a helicopter, and then get him into an ambulance, all in about three and a half hours.
