Summer closure of E 1st Avenue in Vancouver begins

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You have one fewer east-west option through East Vancouver.

East 1st Avenue between Nanaimo Street and Clark Drive is completely closed for Fortis BC gas line upgrades.

“Your alternate routes are going to be Hastings, Grandview Highway, and Broadway,” explains Darren Grieve in the NEWS 1130 Air Patrol.

“What they really want you to avoid is taking any of the back roads in and around 1st Avenue because of course, they’re not meant for high volume. So, if everybody clogs those up, it’s going to be even worse. Don’t take those routes. Just take the main routes.”

Partial lane closures are also still in effect on East 1st Avenue between Nanaimo and Rupert Streets. Fortis BC admits some businesses have been frustrated with the lane closures in the area, but says the upgrades are necessary.

Later this year work will also take place in Burnaby on Lougheed Highway and on Broadway from Madison Avenue to Bainbridge Avenue and next year a similar project will take place on Como Lake Avenue between North Road and Mariner Way in Coquitlam.
