Charges possible after kids left in hot car in Delta

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – Charges are being recommended against a father after his two young children had to be rescued from a hot car on Canada Day.

Onlookers found the three and five-year-olds in a car in the parking lot of Tsawwassen Mills Mall just before 5 p.m.

“The three-year-old had irregular breathing at the time. They were obviously in distress: sweating profusely, wet hair, bright red faces, they’d sweated through their t-shirts,” Cris Leykauf with Delta Police said.

The people unsuccessfully tried to get the eldest to open the door and eventually called police.

An officer arrived and broke the car’s window, freeing the children.

Paramedics were called and the children were taken to the hospital, but have since been released and are reportedly doing well.

The father returned 10 minutes later and was lectured by the officer on the dangers of leaving kids in cars for any amount of time.

“It can definitely be inconvenient and challenging to have young children in the store with you, but it’s far better than the alternative,” Leykauf said.

Police are recommending criminal charges to the Crown, and have also notified the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
