One dead after plane crashes on Sunshine Coast

SECHELT (NEWS 1130) – One person has died after a plane carrying four people crashed shortly after taking off from the airport in Sechelt.

It happened just before 3:00 p.m. “The single engine plane carrying four family members for a sightseeing trip lost power as it was taking off and crashed into a ravine approximately a mile from the Sechelt airport,” explains Constable Karen Whitby with the Sunshince Coast RCMP.

Three people were able to get themselves out of the single-engine Piper Cherokee 140 before walking to a home to call for help.

“Unfortunately the pilot did not survive the crash.”

Search and rescue crews, Mounties, the fire department, and medical helicopter were all called in to Selma Park to assist. The Transportation Safety Board has been notified.

Whitby says the pilot is from the area, but it’s unclear if the relatives were visiting. It’s believed he was flying his personal plane.
