Metro Vancouver’s largest outdoor music festival prompts drug warning

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The two-day Faded in the Park music festival has thousands of people gathered at Holland Park in Surrey.

But, in the midst of an overdose crisis, concert goers are being reminded to stay safe.

All guests will be subject to a search for illicit substances, but Fraser Health Medical Officer Shovita Padhi admits that won’t prevent drug use.

She says those attending the festival should have a sober buddy who can help in case of an overdose.

“That way they can keep an eye on you, watch out and see if you have any signs of an overdose and act immediately. It’s really important they act in a timely manner. The longer you wait, the more dangerous it becomes.”

She says there’s always a risk in consuming illicit drugs.

“Right now you can’t really be sure of what you’re actually getting, and a lot of drugs are contaminated with substances like fentanyl. So what we are suggesting is that if you are using, use with a sober buddy and make sure they can check up on you.”

Even drinking beverages can be risky.

“There’s the whole other issue of getting your drink spiked. The best way to prevent that is to keep an eye on your drinks at all times, even your water bottle.”

Padhi also suggests prioritizing the acts you want to see the most, pacing yourself and avoiding overexertion.

With major acts like Future and Kygo performing, up to 40,000 people are expected to show up before performances wind up Saturday night.
