Vancouver’s film industry set for explosive growth: report

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Our TV and film industry is poised for explosive growth this year, according to a recent Business In Vancouver report. That means post-secondary schools and programs that specialize in the area are booming.

Studios are booked solid right now says BIV’s Tyler Orton.

“We’re gonna be at capacity, maybe even over capacity to a certain degree,” he says.

“Look at where the Canadian dollar is right now, we’re at about 75 cents. A couple years ago it was worth closer to 80 cents, so it’s still very cheap for the Americans to come up here and film.”

And that means the industry has job openings, with schools offering post-secondary programs in the field filling up.

“What I will says is that they have been boosting capacity to what they can. They are essentially just lining up students with jobs [in the industry] as soon as they get out of [school],” he says, adding that was not the case a few years ago.

“In 2013 we really saw that the industry was at a bit of a low point. But now students have zero trouble at all getting jobs and I think [schools] have been trying to boost whatever [capacity] they can at this point.”

And he expects the trend to continue for at least the next couple of years.
