Body of man who went overboard from cruise ship off BC coast recovered

CAPE FLATTERY, Wash. – A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew has recovered the body of a cruise ship passenger who went overboard off the coast of Washington state.

The coast guard said earlier today that the man was missing from the Seven Seas Mariner, which was heading to Victoria on the 10th day of an 11-day Alaska cruise that began in Vancouver on June 30.

Petty Officer Trevor Lilburn says the captain of the cruise ship has reported the man went overboard from the balcony of his stateroom at about 4:15 a.m.

“The cruise ship captain confirmed that a ship video showed the passenger jumping from the eighth deck balcony at 4:15 a.m,” adds Petty Officer 2nd Class Ali Flockerzi.

The vessel was in U.S. waters, just north of Cape Flattery, at the northwestern tip of Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula.

Officials say the crew recovered the unresponsive man earlier this afternoon, but he was later pronounced dead.

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
