The new courthouse will cost $150-million

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – Construction is now underway to create a new $150-million courthouse in Abbotsford.

The project is expected to be completed by early 2021.

This is the first courthouse to be built in B.C. in the last ten years.

B.C. Attorney General David Eby says the 14-room complex will host both Provincial and Supreme Court hearings.

“It will also be a flexible facility able to serve with restorative justice programs and First Nations justice initiatives,” Eby says, noting those are “key pillars” of B.C.’s justice system.

“It’ll be a great improvement on the current facility for the lower Fraser Valley.”

He says it will also help meet the increasing demand for services in the area.

“I’ve heard from many judges and lawyers and court staff and sheriffs in the system that talked about being on new courthouse committees for decades and they are incredibly happy that this facility is finally getting built,” Eby says.
