No sign of increasing Metro Vancouver water restrictions yet

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We shouldn’t have to worry about Metro Vancouver cracking down on water usage.

Darrell Mussatto, North Vancouver City mayor and the head of the regional district’s utilities committee, says the reservoirs are more than 85 per cent full.

“If you look at historical averages, we’re at the better end of that, so we’re situated quite well. It has been lower — 2015 was much lower, this time of year… Our reserve lakes that we have that we use sort of later in the summer are full and ready to go.”

But he says this also means we have to ensure we are not wasting water and abiding by the current Stage 1 water restrictions.

“People are complying, for the most part — which is very good. We’re trying to reduce our water consumption. But should we get some longer dry weather and people start to use more than they should be, we may have to go to another level. But we don’t see that, yet.”

Mussatto says we should all be wise with water.

“When I came home the other day, I ran the tap. I shouldn’t do that. I should get some water in a jug and put it in the fridge so I don’t have to let the water run to get cool. Little things like that add up.”

The current restrictions mean you should only be watering your lawn a maximum of two times per week — on designated times and dates.

“But you don’t even need to water your lawn. It doesn’t die. It just goes dormant. We call them ‘golden lawns’ for a reason. It looks good and the lawn is still quite healthy — it just doesn’t look green.”
