Rio Theatre screening Sunday’s World Cup final

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Soccer fans in the Lower Mainland have an early morning ahead of them on Sunday.

The final game of the 2018 World Cup will go live from Moscow at 8 a.m. and Vancouver’s Rio Theatre will be screening all the action free of charge.

It’s something the Rio has done with past World Cups and Olympic games, and General Manager Corinne Lea says it always produces a fun atmosphere.

“Oh ya, you can hear the cheering through the whole theatre. There are times we’re out working in the lobby or up in the office and you can hear the cheers.”

It’s an all-ages event, so you can sit with your kids on the main floor or if you want to enjoy a Sunday morning beer you can head to the balcony level and watch the game from there.

They aren’t charging a cover fee, even though Lea and others are still trying to raise money to buy the Rio and save it from demolition.

“There’s licensing issues when you’re showing any kind of televised event so that’s why we don’t charge at the door, but we do have an opportunity for people to donate at the concession.”

France will be playing for their first World Cup title in 20 years, Croatia is going for their first ever.
