Critics worry Horgan’s announcement will only benefit union members

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A major infrastructure announcement is expected today from the provincial government, and there is already criticism being leveled at Premier John Horgan.

Rieghard van Enter with the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada worries only union members will benefit.

“We are aware that discussions have been held for the last several months about the community benefit agreements and not a whole lot of people were consulted,” he says. “We’re just concerned that [it] might not be in the best interests of B.C. taxpayers.”

A government advisory states today’s announcement will “bring benefits to workers and communities throughout the province.”

“If these agreements come out, mandating that people have to belong to either a trade union or select groups or certain organizations in order for them to work on these projects, that’s not in the benefit of all British Columbians,” he argues.

Horgan and Transportation Minister Claire Trevena will make the announcement BCIT’s Ironworkers Training Facility in Burnaby.
