Bye-bye birdie: City of Surrey lays out peacock plan

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The City of Surrey is set to detail its plans for dealing with handling the peacock problem in Sullivan Heights.

It’s holding an information session this evening to explain plans to capture and relocate the dozens of birds irritating people in that neighbourhood. The City says first step is making sure the birds don’t have anything to eat.

“We want to eliminate all the feeding sources in the area, so that will make it easier for us to do the trappings. We’re going to talk about what that means, you know, no feeding any of the birds as well as leaving food out,” says Jas Rehal with the City of Surrey.

“The second part is we’re going to start getting in there with more enforcement and more trapping and taking birds that are in people’s homes, you now, if they are sitting on their decks or something we don’t want phone calls coming in for us to remove them. It’ll be a more broad trapping program.”

Rehal adds that he’s hoping the community will get on board with the trapping program, since the peacock issue has been a problem for a while.

“We understand that there’s two sides of the equation here, but, unfortunately, the nuisance activity is too much.”

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the city’s operations centre at 148th and 62nd.
