BC NDP questions poll by opposition that claims 8K childcare spaces will be lost

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – The NDP is questioning the reliability of a survey from the BC Liberals that claims more than 8,000 childcare spaces will be lost if the government continues on its current path.

Minister of State for Childcare Katrina Chen questions the reliability of the poll, noting parents shouldn’t be worried.

She acknowledges it’s a challenge maintaining spaces, but says there are lots being done to improve the system — repeating the recently-announced plan to create up to 22,000 new spaces.

“We currently about 34 initiatives that are ongoing at the same time, including creating spaces, creating providers who are currently providing services and also educators who are in the field,” she says. “There’s a lot more to come.”

Chen says the government needs to make sure it’s working with all types of providers when rolling out policies and adds there is much more to come in improving the system.

The government does not know yet how many new spaces have been created since the NDP came to power.
