Man dies in Surrey workplace accident

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A mechanic has died in a workplace accident in Surrey, according to his union.

International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada Local 502 says it happened earlier today at Fraser Surrey Docks.

“On behalf of the rank and file of the ILWU Canada, I would like express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of our comrade,” says President of ILWU Canada Rob Ashton in a news release.

“This is a very sad day – a worker went to his job this morning and didn’t go home to his family. We can and we must do more to protect all workers from deaths and injuries due to workplace accidents,” Ashton adds.

Details about what led to the man’s death have not been released. His identity has also not been made public.

WorkSafe BC says it was notified about the incident but “it was determined that this workplace is federally regulated.”

We have reached out to Fraser Surrey Docks for comment.
