The man was rushed to hospital but did not survive

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The man killed in Wednesday’s East Vancouver targeted shooting has been identified as a 28-year-old Vancouver man.

It happened before 8 p.m. Police say multiple 911 callers reported hearing shots to fire in the area of Cambridge and Nanaimo Streets.

When officers arrived, they found a man — who has been identified as Matthew Alexander Navas-Rivas — suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

Officers say a friend at the scene was not hurt.

Early Thursday morning, more than a dozen evidence markers and yellow police tape was still surrounding Tillicum Community Annex school, as officers compared notes outside.

“It is still very early in the investigation, but based on the information collected so far, investigators do not believe there is a risk to the general public,” read a release from VPD.

“Well it was just about seven shots,” said one person in the area, who heard the shots. “I knew — I kind of thought — they didn’t sound normal.”

Moments later, he heard the police sirens.

The VPD is looking to speak with anyone who may have been driving in the area of Nanaimo and Cambridge Streets between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. who has dash-cam footage.

This is Vancouver’s 12th homicide of the year.
