Police stick to boots and pants despite hot weather

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – While you may be wearing shorts to help beat the heat, most police officers will be donning boots and long pants.

While cops on the bike squad are issued shorts, typically those on patrol are wearing the standard uniform, even during the summer months.

But, New Westminster Police Chief Dave Jones says he doesn’t hear many complaints.

“We may get a request from one or two members or a few who think that it would be nice to wear shorts but there isn’t a big outcry for it or a big push on behalf of it.”

Jones said being a police officer requires you to sometimes go into dirty places, so being covered up can be a good thing.

“They understand the nature of their work and whether they want to be covered up depending on what they’re doing,” he said. “If they’re going to be searching into places, their role, or who they might be interacting with,” Jones said.

He said the department could afford to buy shorts for all of its members, although it would become too pricey once you add in the need for different footwear — like runners — to go with the shorts.

All cruisers are equipped with A/C which Jones said also helps deal with the heat.
