Hatzic Lake closed, Fraser Health investigating poor water quality

MISSION (NEWS 1130) – A popular lake in the Fraser Valley has been closed after a number of people reported feeling sick after swimming.

Regional District Chair Jason Lum says it was notified yesterday of algae blooms and poor water quality at Hatzic Lake.

“We took water samples and we’re still waiting on test results for those. Until such time, Fraser Health has closed Hatzic Lake for swimming.”

Hatzic Lake is a big area for recreation and Lum says lots of people go to the lake to spend their summer days outside, especially when it gets hot. Unfortunately, the higher temps may have played a role in the water quality at the lake.

“Certainly in a period of prolonged heat like this its not uncommon for algae blooms to form on different lakes but we want to be careful not to jump to conclusions too soon. And we want to proactively make sure that we notify all the lake users and ensure their safety comes first.”

There’s still no official word on what might be making people sick. Fraser Health is currently on scene investigating.
