Three beaches re-opened to swimmers after closures due to bacteria

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A few beaches in West Vancouver are back to being safe to swim in again. This comes after previously being closed off to people wanting to take a dip.

Just in time for the long weekend, levels of E-coli bacteria at Whytecliff, Ambleside, and Sandy Cove beaches have dropped, meaning you can take a dip again.

Tiffany Akins with Vancouver Coastal Health says some beaches are still closed to swimming: Kits Point, Kits Beach, and Trout Lake.

“E. coli bacteria is what we are monitoring. It’s those levels that have been high. E. coli can be from animal or human feces,” she explains.

If you end up in contaminated water, Akins says to wash yourself thoroughly. “Pay special attention to anywhere where you have cuts or anything like that.”

You should also ensure whatever you were wearing at the time is also washed.

If you start feeling sick, you should see your doctor for treatment.
