Over $700,000 donated to help those affected by B.C. wildfires

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As hundreds of wildfires continue to rage across B.C., it looks like Canadians have been generous when it comes to donating to those affected.

Liam Devine with the Canadian Red Cross said about $760,000 has been raised in almost two weeks.

“It has been consistent over the last couple of weeks since we launched the appeal. Every single day, it comes in pretty consistently and evenly across the board… We’ve been pleased so far with the results.”

He added donations have been coming in from across the country.

This wildfire season is so far the second-worst on record, in terms of the area of land scorched by the fires. Last year’s season was the worst in history. Devine did not have any figures to compare donation amounts between this year and last.

If you want to help those affected by the fires, you can make a $10 donation by texting “FIRES” to 45678.

All of the proceeds go to the Canadian Red Cross. All donations made from a BC area code will be matched by the province until Oct. 12.
