Ferry service busy for long weekend, Tsawwassen parking stalls full

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As British Columbians set out to enjoy the Labour Day weekend, it’s expected to be a busy few days for BC Ferries.

This morning a number of ships heading to Vancouver Island filled quickly, leaving some passengers waiting hours for the next sailing.

Deborah Marshall, speaking for BC Ferries, says there are lots of extra sailings this weekend to deal with the high numbers of vacationers, but is warning you to plan well ahead if you’re trying to head out of the Lower Mainland.

“We are seeing some traffic volume at the Tsawwassen terminal and Horseshoe Bay terminal right now, heading over to Vancouver Island as well as the Sunshine Coast,” says Marshall, who expects the ferry traffic to taper off Saturday afternoon and pick up again tomorrow afternoon and on Monday.

She says the Tsawwassen terminal is the busiest today. On Friday, BC Ferries had to cancel morning sailings due to an accident while conducting a safety drill, but Marshall says the backlog was cleared up and today’s sailings are all on schedule.

“We do have hourly sailings, though, between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay, so we’re getting our customers moving as quickly as we can,” Marshall adds.

If you’re heading to the Tsawwassen Terminal, you’re being told to either cab, transit or have a friend drop you off.

That’s because all the paid parking stalls at that station have been filled. Full updates on BC Ferries website.
