Labour Day long weekend has increased chance of road crashes

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Labour Day long weekend is a busy time on our roads, and that is prompting a warning from ICBC.

Christine Kirby, a road safety coordinator for ICBC, says in the Lower Mainland an average 420 people are injured in 1300 crashes every year, so Labour Day Weekend should be a notable one for last-minute vacationers.

“There’s lots more people out on the roads and being the last [long weekend] of the summer tends to bring out more people, so crashes can happen,” Kirby says.

ICBC says five people die and 580 people are hurt in 2,100 crashes across the province on a typical Labour Day long weekend and Kirby wants people to plan their trips and not rush traveling to their favourite spots.

“Just give yourself lots of time to get where you’re going,” Kirby says. “Let people know the route that you’re taking, check Drive BC bofre you go so that you know what the conditions of the roads are. And just take your time, have lots of stops.”
