Class is back in session, and so are school zone speed limits

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Summer break is officially over, as kids head back to school today. Police are going to be paying extra-close attention around school zones.

Expect the roads around most schools to be jammed today. The speed limit in those areas drops to 30km/h between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

“We’re always looking out for distracted drivers. We’re always looking out for speeders. There will be some extra parols done around schools,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Eleanor Sturko.

Cars are often double — sometimes even triple — parked in school drop-off zones.

“We are hoping to have a great start to the school year. So, everybody out there: Be safe, pay attention to the school zones, and look out for young people who are going to be excited, going on their way to school.”

“There have been times when police have come and just kind of checked up on [drivers],” said Grace, who is both a parent and teacher at Shaughnessy Elementary School in Vancouver.

Speeding through a school zone could net you a fine of up to $253.

Distracted driving comes with a $368 fine plus four penalty points. If it’s your first time, you will be hit with a further $175 ICBC Driver Penalty Point premium — that means it costs a total of $543 for the first infraction.
