ICBC proposes changes to make rates fairer, bigger discounts for safe drivers

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The head of ICBC says proposed changes in front of the B.C. Utilities Commission are aimed at making sure there is more accountability.

President and CEO Nicolas Jimenez says the corporation wants to make insurance ratings more fair for more people.

“Today, we think too many high-risk drivers don’t pay their fair share of insurance,” he says. “Conversely, low-risk drivers are paying too much. The changes we’re bringing in today are really focused on making sure that lower-risk drivers share less of a burden in terms of insurance premiums.”

Jimenez says the new rating scheme aims to be fairer for more people in British Columbia. ICBC is proposing bigger discounts for safe drivers, and increasing maximum discounts from 43 to 53 per cent for over 40 years of safe driving.

Who is accountable for crashes is another change proposed. Right now, he says drivers are escaping responsibility because crashes are tied to vehicles, not drivers.

“In the future, crashes are going to be attached to an individual. I cause a crash, I own that crash,” he says.

Jiminez says that ICBC will be working to get the message about about the new changes.
