Construction on Surrey's LRT could begin as early as 2020

The federal government confirmed they would be funding the project Tuesday

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The search is officially on for a contractor to build Surrey’s light rail transit by 2024.

TransLink is now putting out a call to prospective builders to bid on the Surrey-Newton-Guildford line with construction beginning as soon as 2020. The transit authority says they hope to narrow down a short list and award a contract next year.

Today’s announcement comes just one day after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed his government’s $1.37-billion commitment to the project as well as the Broadway Subway in Vancouver.

TransLink’s Sany Zein says he hopes the project will transform the community.

“This will encourage development, it will encourage economic growth on, around and near the light rail transit,” he said.

The project will cost an estimated $1.65 billion.
