More modular housing units unveiled in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The stock of temporary modular homes around Vancouver is now up to 260.

Another 52 units have been added at M. Mitchell Place near the corner of Ash and West 2nd, bringing the city closer to it’s target of having at least 600 open by January.

“Either already occupied or just about to have people move in to them,” Mayor Gregor Robertson says. “Closing in on that goal and the big goal here is to get them all open before the winter hits us hard.”

The new Fairview complex is in what was once an EasyPark lot next to the Olympic Village Canada Line station.

Robertson, who is not seeking re-election next month, says more spaces are needed, especially before winter hits.

“It will be crucial for the next mayor and council to continue the city leadership on this working with the province and I’m hopeful the province will continue to fund in years forward funding that’s necessary to continue building at this pace.”

The provincial government has committed to building at least 2,000 temporary homes across B.C. by next spring.

MLA for Vancouver-Fairview George Heyman says the province is on track.

“We have a commitment to 4,500 units over a 10 year period in the budget-to-date as well as additional units of affordable housing in a variety of forms for everyone,” he says. “We are in the process of just beginning, the finance minister is in the process of beginning the budget build.”

M. Mitchell Place, which is named after former politician and longtime advocate for homeless people Margaret Mitchell, will be managed by the PHS Community Services Society.
