Metro Vancouverites to see relief at the pump: expert

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – After weeks of climbing gas prices across Metro Vancouver, drivers may finally see some relief, that’s according to Gas Buddy analyst Dan McTeague.

McTeague says drivers can expect the price of gas to drop as much as four cents by next weekend.

He says one of the reasons is because retailers are switching over from the summer blend of gasoline.

“We could see a circumstance where prices drop three or four cents a litre wholesale as we cross that threshold from refineries being required to sell summer spec gasoline versus winter spec gasoline.,” he says.

McTeague says prices have continued to climb across the region and aren’t decreasing in the long term.

“We’re still at, for early September, the highest prices we’ve seen going back to 2013. September at this time in 14, 15, 16 and 17 were all substantially cheaper,” McTeague says. “At this time last year, you were almost 20 cents a litre less. So it does look like this higher than usual prices are here to stay.”

He says Metro Vancouver has the highest average gas prices in all of North America.

Prices could rise even more this month, McTeague warns, that’s because of hurricanes affecting the U.S. Gulf coast, which is home to half the refinery output in all of North America.
